Method: Buy as a start: Buy as a nursery start and transplant outside. Fig is slow or unreliable from seed, so most gardeners skip seed-starting it entirely.

Spacing: about 50 square feet per plant (square-foot-gardening spacing). Mature height: 8-15 ft.

Figs are the most generous fruit tree a small garden can have. They fruit within a year or two of planting rather than the five an apple takes, they need no pollination partner, and the common varieties need no pollinating wasp either. They're also the only fruit here that people routinely grow in a pot and drag into a garage each winter, which is what puts them within reach of gardeners in zone 6.

How fig fits zone 10's season

Zone 10b's frost-free window runs about 324 days, from January 30 to December 20. Fig takes about 1 growing season to reach first worthwhile harvest, so what matters here is how many of these seasons it gets, not whether one is long enough.

Fig is hardy in zones 7-11, so in zone 10b it stays in the ground through winter and comes back rather than being replanted. Allow about 8 ft of spread at maturity.
