Peppers are close cousins to tomatoes in care, but slower to get going and less forgiving of a cold snap. They stall out below about 55°F, where tomatoes just slow down. That's why our planting calendar generally has peppers starting indoors even earlier than tomatoes.

How pepper fits zone 10's season

Zone 10b's frost-free window runs about 324 days, from January 30 to December 20. Pepper needs about 75 days from transplant to first harvest.

Heat warning for zone 10b: Zone 10b summer nights commonly exceed 75°F, which stalls pollination and causes blossom drop in Pepper at the height of summer (University of Maryland Extension, via UDel Cooperative Extension). Expect a slow patch for fruit set during the hottest stretch even though the plant keeps growing. It typically resumes once nights cool.
