Pepper in Zone 11a & 11b
Capsicum annuum
When to plant pepper in zone 11b
Zones 11a and 11b share the same average frost dates in our data, so this page covers both.
Method: Start indoors: Start indoors from seed, then transplant outside. Pepper needs a head start most zones can't give it by direct-sowing alone.
| Start indoors | Nov 6–Nov 13 |
|---|---|
| Direct sow / transplant outside | Jan 15–Jan 22 |
| Estimated harvest | Mar 31–Apr 7 (~75 days after transplanting) |
Spacing: 1 per square foot (square-foot-gardening spacing). Mature height: 1.5-3 ft.

Peppers are close cousins to tomatoes in care, but slower to get going and less forgiving of a cold snap. They stall out below about 55°F, where tomatoes just slow down. That's why our planting calendar generally has peppers starting indoors even earlier than tomatoes.
How pepper fits zone 11's season
Zone 11b is frost-free in this dataset, so frost is not what limits the calendar here. What you can plant, and when, comes down to summer heat and daylength instead.
Heat warning for zone 11b: Zone 11b summer nights commonly exceed 75°F, which stalls pollination and causes blossom drop in Pepper at the height of summer (University of Maryland Extension, via UDel Cooperative Extension). Expect a slow patch for fruit set during the hottest stretch even though the plant keeps growing. It typically resumes once nights cool.
Good companions
- Basil: Reputed to repel aphids and improve pepper growth nearby, but a controlled garden trial testing this same claim on a related crop found no pest-reduction benefit from basil, and actually found higher pest counts on the basil-companioned plants — treat this pairing as unproven, not as a working pest deterrent.
- Onion: Reputed to deter many common pepper pests, though this specific pairing hasn't been tested the way onion/carrot pest-masking has — treat it as garden tradition. (usually zones 3-10, so not a pairing for zone 11b)
