Sweet potato isn’t related to the regular potato at all — it’s grown from slips, which are rooted sprouts started from a mature sweet potato, rather than from seed or a cut tuber. It also wants more heat and a longer season than most gardeners expect, which is why an early indoor start matters even though the plant itself is a vigorous, sprawling vine once it’s established.
What to expect
Start slips indoors roughly eight weeks before your last frost, then don’t transplant outdoors until the soil is genuinely warm — sweet potato is markedly more heat- and cold-sensitive at the root level than its name suggests. Bury most of the stem when transplanting, leaving just the top leaves exposed; roots will form along the buried stem. Vines sprawl widely, so this is a bed-edge or corner crop, not one for the interior. Beans planted nearby help supply nitrogen for the vigorous vine growth.
Common problems
Lots of vine and few usable roots is usually a nitrogen problem — too much fertilizer pushes leafy growth at the expense of root development, since sweet potato tubers form best in moderate, not rich, soil.
