Growing Primula: A Complete Profile

Primula is one of the earliest things in the garden, often flowering before the last frost has passed.
Shade and moisture, not sun
NC State Extension lists it for dappled sunlight or partial shade, which puts it in a small group here. Most of our flower list wants six hours of direct sun. Primula wants the opposite, and it wants steady moisture with it. A dry, bright square kills it inside a season.
That makes it useful for the north side of a taller crop, or a bed that a fence shades for half the day.
Not the same as evening primrose
Two unrelated plants share the word primrose. This is Primula vulgaris. Our showy evening primrose is Oenothera speciosa, a spreading summer perennial with nothing else in common.
Sizes and season
Hardy in zones 4 through 8. It reaches roughly 6 to 12 inches. The toolbox’s own height field for this entry spans the whole genus, from three inches to six feet, so the figure we use comes from published sizes for the species rather than from that field.
It flowers in April, then sits quietly for the rest of the year. Seed needs light to germinate and a cold period first, so it goes in early rather than after the frost date.
