Growing Showy Evening Primrose: A Complete Profile
By Growing Home Greens Team · August 19, 2026
Showy evening primrose is the most aggressive plant in this dataset, and the extension source says so directly rather than hinting at it.
Read the warning before you plant it
NC State Extension tags this plant weedy, rates its maintenance high, and states plainly that it spreads by stoloniferous rootstocks and by seed to form a groundcover, and that it can take over a perennial garden. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to decide where it is allowed to go before it decides for you.
Three approaches work. Plant it in a container. Plant it where a hard edge, a path, or a wall stops the runners. Or plant it in poor, rocky, infertile soil, which is the condition the extension service recommends for keeping it to a clump instead of a colony. Feeding and watering it produces exactly the outcome you were warned about.
Pink flowers, evening habit, summer into fall
It is hardy in zones 5 through 8 and flowers through summer and fall at one to two feet tall. The common name comes from the flowers opening toward evening, though in some regions they stay open through the day. It takes full sun or partial shade, and flowers considerably better in sun.
What that means for a square-foot bed
Our designer treats it as a sprawler and reserves it a full square, but the square is a polite fiction for a plant that spreads underground. If you are putting it in a shared raised bed, put it in a buried pot inside the bed, or accept that it becomes the bed’s groundcover within a couple of seasons.
Where that suits you, it earns its place: it fills difficult dry ground that most perennials refuse, and it does it without irrigation once established.
