Rocoto Pepper in Zone 3a & 3b

Capsicum pubescens

Rocoto pepper can grow in zones 3a and 3b, but its usual harvest starts after the average first frost, so it takes an early variety and frost protection. Start seeds indoors Mar 7–Mar 14 and plant out Jun 13–Jun 20.

When to plant rocoto pepper in zone 3b

Zones 3a and 3b share the same average frost dates, so this page covers both.

Method: Start indoors: Start indoors from seed, then transplant outside. It needs a head start most zones can't give it by direct-sowing alone.

Start indoorsMar 7–Mar 14
Direct sow / transplant outsideJun 13–Jun 20
Estimated harvestOct 11–Oct 18 (~120 days after transplanting)

Spacing: about 4 square feet per plant (square-foot-gardening spacing). Mature height: 3-4 ft.

Before you plant: Zone 3b's first fall frost usually comes close to or before the harvest. See the details below.

These go outside within two weeks of rocoto pepper in zone 3b, so one planting day can cover them.

Rocoto is *Capsicum pubescens*, the Andean pepper with fuzzy leaves, purple flowers and black seeds. It behaves differently from every other pepper here: it prefers mild weather and grows into a woody shrub.

How rocoto pepper fits zone 3's season

Zone 3b's frost-free window runs about 98 days, from May 30 to September 5. Rocoto pepper needs about 120 days from transplant to first harvest.

Frost risk in zone 3b: Harvest usually starts about 36 days after zone 3b's average first frost (September 5), and rocoto pepper is damaged by even a light frost. Expect frost to arrive first in most years unless you choose the fastest-maturing variety you can find, start it as early as the dates above allow, and cover plants on cold nights.
