Lemon Drop Pepper in Zone 3a & 3b

Capsicum baccatum

Lemon Drop pepper can grow in zones 3a and 3b, but its usual harvest starts after the average first frost, so it takes an early variety and frost protection. Start seeds indoors Mar 21–Mar 28 and plant out Jun 13–Jun 20.

When to plant Lemon Drop pepper in zone 3b

Zones 3a and 3b share the same average frost dates, so this page covers both.

Method: Start indoors: Start indoors from seed, then transplant outside. It needs a head start most zones can't give it by direct-sowing alone.

Lemon Drop is a Peruvian seasoning pepper, *Capsicum baccatum*, that Baker Creek describes as ripening to a clear lemon yellow with a clean, slightly citrusy heat. It is good in jellies and preserves.

How Lemon Drop pepper fits zone 3's season

Zone 3b's frost-free window runs about 98 days, from May 30 to September 5. Lemon Drop pepper needs about 100 days from transplant to first harvest.

Frost risk in zone 3b: Harvest usually starts about 16 days after zone 3b's average first frost (September 5), and Lemon Drop pepper is damaged by even a light frost. Expect frost to arrive first in most years unless you choose the fastest-maturing variety you can find, start it as early as the dates above allow, and cover plants on cold nights. (Frost tolerance and protection advice: Purdue Extension.)
