Growing Tobacco: A Complete Profile

Nicotiana tabacum is the commercial tobacco species, and growing it at home raises three separate issues worth knowing.

Toxicity

NC State Extension does not hedge: “HIGHLY TOXIC, MAY BE FATAL IF EATEN! Vomiting, diarrhea, slow pulse, dizziness, collapse, and respiratory failure may occur if eaten.” The poison is nicotine and related alkaloids, in the leaves and flowers.

Regulation

Growing tobacco for personal use is regulated in some jurisdictions and taxed in others, and the rules differ by country and by state. Check before planting a row of it.

It shares tomato’s pests

Tobacco and tomato are both nightshades, and tobacco hornworm and tomato hornworm move freely between them. A tobacco plant next to a tomato bed is a nursery for the caterpillars that will strip the tomatoes. Tobacco mosaic virus moves the same way.

Growing it

Three to ten feet tall and one to two feet wide, so it takes the north edge and nothing else. Perennial in zones 7 through 11 and annual elsewhere. Seed is dust-fine and needs light, started about eight weeks before the last frost.
