Rock soapwort is a trailing rock-garden perennial, and it is a different plant from the soapwort already in this dataset.
Two soapworts, two habits
Our other entry, saponaria, is Saponaria vaccaria: an upright annual grown as a cut flower. Rock soapwort is S. ocymoides: a perennial that grows six to nine inches tall and one to two feet wide, trailing rather than standing. Same genus, opposite shapes, and the seed rack sells both simply as soapwort.
Hardy almost anywhere
NC State Extension lists it from zone 2a through 9b, which is one of the widest ranges of anything here. It wants full sun and flowers May through August, with individual bloom periods running about three weeks.
Cut it back or it hollows out
The predictable failure with this plant is not death but shape. By its third season an uncut plant goes open and woody through the middle while the outer edges keep trailing, so you end up with a ring instead of a mat. Cutting it back hard right after flowering prevents that, and it is the single piece of maintenance this plant asks for.
Give it an edge to fall over
Rock soapwort spreads to roughly twice its height in width and does all of it sideways at ankle level. Planted in the middle of a bed it smothers whatever is next to it without ever rising above it. Planted at the edge of a raised bed, a wall, or a slope, it does the thing it is grown for. Our designer reserves it about two square feet and flags it as a sprawler for that reason.
