Saponaria, also called soapwort, is a cottage-garden cut-flower filler, airy and sturdy in a way that makes it a reliable bouquet component even for a first-time cut-flower grower.
Cool weather is the whole game
This plant performs best where summers stay cool, blooming from July into August. Direct-seed in early spring while the soil is still cool and a light frost is still possible, sowing 2 to 3 seeds every 2 inches at an eighth of an inch deep, then thin to 2 to 9 inches apart once true leaves appear. Transplanting also works, started 2 to 3 weeks before your last frost. Germination takes 7 to 10 days at 70°F.
Succession sowing for continuous bloom
Rather than one early flush, sow a new round every 2 to 3 weeks until midsummer. This spreads the bloom window out considerably instead of concentrating it into a single cutting period.
Harvest early in the spray
Cut for a vase once just one or two flowers in a spray have opened; the rest continue opening after cutting, extending the useful vase life well past the harvest date.
