Pumpkins ask for more room and more patience than almost anything else in the garden: around 110 days from seed to harvest, and vines that sprawl far enough that planning calls for a mere tenth of a plant per square foot — in practice, that means giving one plant several square feet to itself.
What to expect
Direct-seed outdoors about a week after your last frost; pumpkins don’t like having their roots disturbed by transplanting. The vines will travel well beyond where you plant them, so budget space generously rather than tucking them into a small bed. Fruit is ready when the rind has hardened and the color has fully developed — pumpkins timed for a fall harvest are usually seeded in early summer, not spring.
Common problems
Cross-pollination and crowding with other squash-family plants (especially winter squash) hurts both fruit quality and plant vigor — keep them separated if you’re growing both. Vines that wilt suddenly in the middle of summer are often a sign of squash vine borer, which tunnels into the stem near the base; check there first before assuming it’s a watering issue.
