Starting seeds indoors is really a handful of separate small systems running at once - moisture, warmth, light, airflow, feeding - and most of what goes wrong traces back to one of them being off, not to the seeds themselves. Here’s the setup stage by stage.

Sowing

Fill a tray with a light seed-starting mix (not garden soil, which compacts and smothers young roots), sow at the depth on the seed packet - a rough rule is about twice the seed’s own diameter, and some very fine seed (lettuce, many flowers) wants to sit on the surface with no covering at all since it needs light to germinate. Water it in gently and keep the mix moist, not soaked, from here through germination.

The humidity dome: on during germination, off right after

A clear dome over the tray traps moisture so the surface never dries out while seeds are germinating, which is the single easiest way to get an even, reliable sprout. Once most of the seeds in a tray are up, take the dome off. Left on into the seedling stage, it holds still, damp air right at the soil line, and that’s exactly the environment damping-off disease needs to take out a whole tray overnight.

Light: starts when seedlings emerge, not before

Seeds don’t need light to germinate under a dome (most don’t, anyway), but the moment green shows, get the tray under a light. Seedlings that sit even a day or two without enough light stretch thin and pale reaching for it, and that legginess doesn’t reverse. Height above the plants matters more than people expect. Start the light just 2-3 inches above the tray and keep it there - too far away and the light is too weak to do its job, which is the actual cause of most of that stretching, not too little light overall. As true leaves come in and the plants gain height, raise the light to hold that same 2-3 inch gap; letting the gap grow as the plant grows is a slow version of the same “seedling reaching for light” problem you were avoiding at the start.

Temperature by stage

Most seeds germinate fastest with warm soil, around 70-80°F depending on the crop - a heat mat under the tray gets there reliably, especially if the room itself runs cool. Once seedlings are up, that heat requirement drops: pull the mat, or turn it down, since seedling growth is happier a bit cooler than germination wants, and running a mat the whole time just pushes them to stretch faster than the light can keep up with.

Feeding: nothing until true leaves, then go light

A seed carries its own starter nutrition for the first stretch of growth - the pair of leaves that come up first (the cotyledons) aren’t true leaves, and feeding a seedling before true leaves show up doesn’t help it and can burn young roots. Once the first set of true leaves opens, a diluted liquid feed (quarter to half strength of what the label says for a mature plant) every week or two is enough until it’s time to move up to a bigger container.

Moving up: bigger pots, and the space that comes with it

The signal to move a seedling into a bigger container is either true leaves filling out or roots starting to circle the bottom of the cell when you check - don’t wait for it to look obviously root-bound, since a stalled, root-bound seedling loses time it won’t make back. A bigger container needs more than just floor space on the shelf: it’s taller, so the light-height math from earlier restarts at a new baseline, and the whole tray likely needs to move to a taller shelf tier or the next slot up if you’re on adjustable shelving.

Grow tent or open shelving

A grow tent earns its cost in narrower situations: containing light spill and humidity in a room that isn’t dedicated to seed starting, or keeping pets and kids from knocking over trays that are sitting out in the open. Neither one is required to grow good seedlings; it’s a tradeoff between convenience and cost, not a correctness question.

Shelving and airflow

If you’re building multi-tier shelving, plan each shelf’s clearance around the same numbers already covered above: the tray height, the plant’s expected height at that stage, the light fixture itself, and the 2-3 inch gap the light needs above the plants - plus room to raise the light further as they grow. A shelf spaced for a 2-inch seedling is too short once that tray is full of 6-inch tomato starts a few weeks later, which is why adjustable shelving is worth the small extra cost over a fixed unit.

A small clip fan running nearby does two things worth the tiny bit of extra clutter: it keeps air moving so damp, still air doesn’t sit at the soil line (the other major factor in damping-off, alongside a dome left on too long), and it makes stems flex the way wind does outdoors, so plants come out of this stage sturdier instead of tall and thin.

Hardening off

About a week before your actual outdoor transplant date - check the planting calendar for that date in your zone - start moving trays outside for a little longer each day. Begin in shade for an hour or two, and over 7 to 10 days work up to full sun and a full day outside. Skipping this step is the fastest way to lose seedlings that were perfectly healthy indoors: a plant that’s never felt real sun or wind can scorch or snap in its first unprotected day outside, even though nothing was wrong with how it was grown.
