Snapdragons are one of the few flowers here that actually tolerate a light frost, which makes their planting window a little more forgiving than most — though the long indoor lead time before that still catches people off guard.
What to expect
Start snapdragon seed indoors about 9 weeks before last frost, surface-sown and barely covered since it needs light to germinate. Transplants can go out about a week before last frost given their frost tolerance. It matures in around 90 days — one of the slower flowers on this list — and packs in at 2 per square foot. Taller varieties can reach 3 feet and will shade out shorter neighbors if planted too close, so factor height into placement the same way you would with any tall vegetable.
Common problems
Rust — orange-brown pustules on the undersides of leaves — is the most common serious snapdragon problem, and it tends to show up later in the season even on varieties with decent resistance. Good spacing and avoiding overhead watering late in the day both help slow it down. Weak, floppy stems on taller varieties are usually a light or crowding issue rather than a disease.
