Growing Roselle: A Complete Profile

Roselle is grown for the fleshy red calyx left behind when the flower drops, which is what red hibiscus tea is made from. Almost everything about its timing is late.
It flowers in October
NC State Extension puts blooming from mid to late October, with fruit maturing through November and December. That is not a typo and it is not a warm-climate quirk you can plan around: the plant is daylength sensitive and will not flower until the nights lengthen. In a short season it makes a large handsome shrub and then frost takes it before anything is harvestable.
That is why our calendar starts it indoors early and why it is worth the eight-week head start.
Shrub scale, not herb scale
It reaches four to seven feet and wants three to six feet of space, so this is a plant for the end of a bed or a bed of its own rather than a square among the vegetables. It will not grow at all without full sun.
More of it is edible than you would expect
The leaves, flowers, calyces, roots and seeds are all edible. The leaves are tart and used as a green in West African and Caribbean cooking, so a plant that fails to flower in time is not a total loss.
In zones 8 through 11 it survives the winter and returns; in zones 3 through 7 it is a fast-growing annual. Our entry models it as an annual so it keeps zone pages across that whole range.
