Growing Moonflower: A Complete Profile

Moonflower is the after-hours counterpart to most of the pollinator flowers on this site: its large white trumpet blooms open in the evening and close by morning, timed to a completely different set of pollinators — sphinx and hawk moths — than the daytime bees and butterflies everything else here is grown for. It’s also a genuinely fast, vigorous climber, easily topping 12 feet in a single season.
What to expect
Soak seed overnight before sowing to soften the hard seed coat, and start it indoors about 5 weeks before your last frost or direct-sow right around frost date. It needs a trellis in place from the start — this vine grows fast and will climb whatever’s nearest, wanted or not. It’s only a true perennial in tropical zones 10-12; elsewhere, plan on growing it fresh from seed each year. Plant 2 per square foot at the base of its support.
Common problems
Seed that fails to sprout is usually a prep issue, not a bad seed lot — the seed coat is hard enough that skipping the overnight soak noticeably slows or blocks germination. A vine that isn’t blooming yet by midsummer just needs more time and warmth; this is a heat-loving climber that takes a while to size up before it starts flowering in earnest each evening.
