Growing Maiden Pinks: A Complete Profile

Maiden pinks is the hardiest of the three Dianthus species in this dataset and the only one that behaves like a groundcover.
Not the same as carnation or sweet william
All three are Dianthus, and the seed rack does not always make the difference clear. Carnation is Dianthus caryophyllus, an upright cut flower. Sweet william is D. barbatus, a clustered biennial. Maiden pinks is D. deltoides: six to twelve inches tall, spreading to as much as two feet wide, and hardy down to zone 3, which is colder than either of the others tolerates.
Drainage matters more than feeding
The usual way to lose this plant is a wet winter in heavy soil, not a cold one. It forms a low evergreen mat that sits on the soil surface all winter, and that mat rots where water sits. Sharp drainage, a gritty or rocky spot, and no rich feeding is the recipe. Full sun, six or more hours.
Flowers arrive in late spring, May through July, in pink, white or red on top of the foliage mat.
A perennial that earns its square slowly
Our calendar records it as reaching its first real flowering the season after sowing, and it widens each year after that. Direct sowing about two weeks before your last frost suits it, since the seed does not need warm soil.
Where it works best is an edge, a wall top, or the gap between stepping stones, rather than the middle of a productive bed. At a square each in our spacing model it will spill past that square within two years, which is the intended behaviour rather than a problem.
