Growing Hosta: A Complete Profile

Hosta is grown for foliage. NC State Extension says so directly: it is valued for striking leaves in green, blue, gold and variegated forms, and the flowers are a modest bonus.

Deer and slugs

Deer eat hosta to the ground, and they will return to the same plants every night until nothing is left. Slugs do the same more slowly, leaving the leaves holed. In an unfenced garden, planting hosta is a decision about whether you are prepared to defend it.

Thicker, more heavily textured blue-leaved cultivars resist slugs better than thin green ones.

Deep shade is fine

Dappled sunlight or deep shade, hardy zones 3 through 9. Sizes range enormously by cultivar, from four inches to two and a half feet tall and up to three feet across, so check the tag before assigning it a square.

Seed will not give you the plant you bought

Hostas are normally divided rather than raised from seed, and seedlings do not come true to the parent’s variegation. A seed-grown hosta is usually plain green. If you want a specific cultivar, buy a division.
