Goldenseal is a shade-dependent Native American medicinal root, propagated from root divisions rather than seed, since any piece with a bud and a few fibrous roots will grow into a new plant.
Real shade, like its ginseng relative
Goldenseal needs at least 75 percent shade, ideally under a hardwood canopy of oak, maple, sycamore, or basswood, an even stricter shade requirement than American ginseng. It prefers a light loam soil high in humus with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5, and good drainage is critical for healthy plants.
Planting from root divisions
Cover the rootstock with 2 inches of soil. Spacing depends on how long the bed will be left undisturbed before harvest: 6 inches apart in rows 8 inches apart for a 3-year harvest, 8 inches apart in 8-inch rows for a 4-year harvest, or 8 inches apart in 10-inch rows for anything longer. Weed carefully around young plants to avoid disturbing the roots, and mulch once established to suppress weeds without hand-weeding near the crown.
A multi-year wait
Roots grown from divisions can be harvested after three to five years of growth. Dig in fall, September or October, once the tops have died back for the season.
