Sowing it either way, and letting it get lean

Gaillardia can go in either as an indoor start (about 7 weeks before your last frost) or direct-sown a week after frost, seed set about 1/4 inch deep; it’s not fussy about which. At a full plant per square foot, it’s dense enough to use as a groundcover-style planting rather than an occasional accent. Once established it shrugs off drought and heat that would stress most other flowers. It’s a common pairing with lantana in Arizona xeriscape beds for exactly that reason.

Floppy growth means too much water, not too little

Leggy, floppy growth is unusual for this plant and usually points to too much shade or too much water. Gaillardia performs best lean and sunny, not pampered. Sparse blooming in the first year from seed is normal; give it full sun and don’t overwater rather than assuming something’s wrong.
