Eucalyptus supplies the silver-blue, rounded foliage familiar from florist bouquets, grown here from seed as an annual cut-flower filler outside its natural zone 9-11 perennial range.

Handle the transplant carefully

Transplanting is recommended, sowing seed 8 to 10 weeks before planting out, covered lightly, with high humidity helping germination along. Seedlings dislike root disturbance, so bottom-water or mist rather than watering from above, and avoid letting roots circle in a too-small cell before moving up. Harden off and transplant outside once frost danger has passed. Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart.

Harvest once it’s woody

Cut once the leaves feel leathery and the stems have turned woody, not while the growth is still soft and green. Fresh-cut stems can be hung to dry, or preserved in a glycerin and water solution, which produces a more durable, pliable stem that still looks freshly cut rather than dried.
