Growing Cultivated Dandelion: A Complete Profile

Cultivated dandelion is the same species as the weed that shows up uninvited in most lawns, but grown on purpose in loose, fertile soil, it’s a different vegetable: bigger, more tender leaves and thicker roots than a wild plant scraping by in compacted turf ever manages.
Sowing it
Direct-sow anytime after your last spring frost, or about 6 weeks before your first fall frost for an autumn crop. Seed needs some light to germinate, so sow it shallowly rather than burying it. Germination takes 7 to 21 days and tends to go better in cool soil than warm. Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart; mature plants reach 8 to 18 inches tall.
Harvest young, before it flowers
Leaves are harvested while still tender and sweet, before flowering, typically in the plant’s first year. Once dandelion blooms, the leaves turn noticeably more bitter, so if mild greens are the goal, don’t let harvest slip past the point the plant starts to flower.
Deep, rich soil for better roots
Dandelion adapts to most soils and thrives in full sun, but produces its best, largest roots in deep, moist, rich soil, the opposite of the compacted ground it’s usually associated with. Overhead watering invites mildew, so watering at the soil line is worth the extra care.
