Corn poppy is the classic red field poppy of European farmland, a fast, easy annual that self-sows so readily once established that a single good year of blooms often leads to volunteers coming back on their own.
Direct-seed only
Unlike a lot of the flowers in this dataset, corn poppy doesn’t transplant well; its taproot is too sensitive to survive the disturbance. Direct-seed as soon as the soil is workable in spring, a quarter inch deep. The seed needs darkness to germinate, so cover it rather than leaving it exposed on the surface. Germination takes 14 to 21 days at 60-75°F. Thin plants to 6 to 8 inches apart; mature plants reach 12 to 24 inches tall.
A brief but showy bloom
Cut for a vase when buds are swollen and just showing color, not fully open, since cut corn poppy has a short vase life of only 2 to 4 days. That short window makes it better suited to garden display, where the flowers keep opening in succession over weeks, than to a dedicated cutting row.
