Why the pot ones usually die
A mum bought in full flower in autumn has put everything into bloom and has no time to root before winter. Planted in spring instead, or planted in autumn and mulched heavily, it establishes and returns.
Pinch until midsummer
Left alone, a mum flowers early on long stems and flops. Pinching the growing tips out repeatedly through early summer, stopping around the middle of July, produces the dense low mound that flowers in autumn. This is the single technique that separates a good garden mum from a sprawling one.
Sizes
One to three feet tall and one to two feet across, in full sun. Bloom is in autumn, triggered by shortening days, which is why it is reliable as the last thing flowering in a bed.
