Celosia is a dense, upright bloomer — either the crested “brain” type or the feathery plume type — that handles heat and drought well once it’s up and growing, making it one of the more forgiving flowers on this list.
What to expect
Start indoors about 7 weeks before your last frost, or direct sow a week after, seed set shallow at about 1/8 inch. Soil needs to be above 60°F for reliable germination, so don’t rush it into cold spring ground. At 2 per square foot, celosia is dense enough to plant as a real block of color rather than scattered accents, and it’s a strong performer through zone 9-11 desert heat once it’s established.
Common problems
Slow or spotty germination usually traces back to cold soil — wait until it’s reliably above 60°F rather than pushing seed in early to save time.
