Astilbe gives feathery plumes in shade, which is a rare combination. It asks for one thing in return and it does not negotiate.
Dry soil scorches it, and it does not recover
Most shade perennials tolerate a dry spell and sulk. Astilbe browns at the leaf edges and stays that way for the rest of the season. If a square dries out in July, this is the wrong plant for it, or it needs mulch and a watering habit.
Sizes vary more than you would expect
The toolbox gives a range of one and a half to four and a half feet tall, depending entirely on cultivar. That is the difference between a front-row plant and something that anchors the back of a bed, so check the tag rather than assuming.
Width is a more predictable one to two feet. Hardy zones 3 through 9, in full sun, partial shade or dappled sunlight, though full sun only works where soil stays reliably damp.
Leave the plumes
The spent flower heads dry to a rust colour and hold their shape into winter. Cutting them off in autumn removes the plant’s second season of interest.
