How to care for a wax plant

A vine with thick, waxy leaves. Bright, indirect light year-round is ideal. Use a loose, fast-draining mix rich in organic matter and let it dry out between waterings, with room-temperature water. It likes high humidity and doesn't mind being pot-bound; when you do repot, go no more than 2 inches bigger. Most plants don't flower until 2 or 3 years old. Don't cut off the short spurs flowers came from, because they bloom again for years. It can summer outdoors in partial shade; bring it in when nights drop below 50°F.

Common problems

Soil too wet or too dry makes leaves drop. Mealybugs, fungus gnats in soggy mix, and spider mites in dry air. Cold water shocks it.
