Companion Planting & Garden Value: Pear

Pyrus communis

Spacing: needs about 16 square feet per plant. Mature height: 14-18 ft.

Pollination

Not self-fertile: a single plant won't reliably set fruit. Nearly every pear variety needs a second, different variety blooming at the same time to fruit well; a couple (Seckel, Kieffer) set some fruit alone but still do better paired. Pear flowers draw fewer bees than most fruit trees, so three varieties nearby is sometimes recommended over two. (source)
